Today I’m doing something new: my first interview with Spanish jewelry designers Ana and Marta from ABATABA. The first time I saw their work I fell in love and got a bit hungry {you will know what I mean} for every item from their site. Now, let’s get to work.
Drastic Plastic: Hello ladies and welcome to Drastic Plastic. What’s up?
ABATABA: Hi, Tereza. Thank you!
DP: Where does ABATABA come from? Does it mean anything in particular?
A: Nothing in particular, it’s made up. We liked it and specially the fact that it’s a palindrome (you can read it from left to right or vice versa).
DP: You created ABATABA in 2010. Is that when you started to create jewelry too, or did you have a background in this area of design?
A: We really create our own jewelry and accessories (even customize clothes) a long time ago. We love fashion and we always were looking for something different we couldn’t found in the market.
DP: On your site you have the “Personalized order” option, tell me about one of these “orders” that stands out in your mind right now?
A: We have made lots of things and every one completely different… For example, it was funny to make a ‘mojito’ cup for a girl’s birthday.
DP: Why ABATABA “SWEET”? I love the idea, but where did it come from?
A: The idea is to do something funny and ‘sweet’. We have a really sweet tooth and love the idea to do miniature sweets, cakes, pastries, etc. and turn them into sophisticated jewels.
DP: Ana, what type of object do you like creating best? Marta how about you?
A: We think everything has something special… but, maybe the Peter Pan necklaces, on which we have worked a lot to get the perfect one.
DP: It was lovely having you ladies here, thank you so much.
A: Thank YOU!!
